Stroking out the 5.7L LS1 V8 to no more than 383 cubic inches (6.3L) is fundamental in preserving its reliability. Unfortunately, given the manufacturing processes that were in place at the time of release, the cast iron cylinder liners could only be bored out by 0.010”. Anymore than this could potentially deform cylinder walls under high pressure, especially in boosted applications.

Unfortunately, Manley Performance does not have an off-the-shelf kit ready to go for the LS1. Therefore, we have taken the time and used our sought after automotive engineering background to select an appropriate combination from their custom parts list to suit both naturally aspirated and boosted setups.

Mace 1.9 ratio roller rockers (up from 1.65) with Crow Cams pushrods are suitable for Holden Commodore and similar platforms fitted with Ecotec (L36) or L67 supercharged V6 engines. This is a very cost effective way to bump up the performance of your vehicle, by increasing valve lift and allowing your engine to breathe much more efficiently.

 

Key Benefits:

  • Gains of around 13 to 16kW are not uncommon. Higher in some cases where others mods have been undertaken.
  • In addition to top end gains, excellent low to mid range power gains are also achieved with these rockers.
  • It’s an easy DIY mod and takes around two hours to be done unlike a complete cam change. A cam change can take a good part of a day and is more complex to undertake meaning higher installation costs along with the cost of a retune which these rockers don't require, potentially saving you thousands!
  • Unlike some aftermarket rockers these don't require spring upgrades as they best preserve the factory valve train harmonics, to prevent them from having valve float, hurting power and causing engine damage. Even when valve springs are upgraded (which is a costly exercise) to prevent this valve float from occurring, power output drops because the engine has to work against these stiffer springs. Basically, it can be a case of spending more money for less power than what these rockers have to offer!

Since the release of the Holden Ecotec V6, we have built up an extensive library of tunes to accommodate a variety of builds and configurations with exceptional results. Each project that we receive is carefully analyzed based on the custom tune form, the customer is required to fill out after making the purchase. Once we have verified that the information provided complies with our tuning capabilities, a specific tune file is selected and slightly tweaked to tailor it to the vehicles current setup. This alleviates all the compromises that were made by Holden in the engine calibration during mass production.

We can cater for most modifications, ranging from a simple cold air intake all the way through to a camshaft upgrade or L67 conversion which will yield improvements such as; refined fuel economy, smoother power delivery, greater throttle response and of course an increase in all out power and torque.

If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, the settings are revamped to provide firmer gear shifts by increasing the line pressures which render the gearbox more reliable in the long term. Other features like adjusting the fan enable temps can also be made.

Power output will differ from model to model however, in a fair comparison we usually see at least an 8kw gain at the rear wheels in an absolutely stock vehicle, meaning the more modifications that have been made, the higher the final power figure will be.
Fitment is simple, handled by even the most inexperienced DIY enthusiast in around 10-minutes with only basic tools. The factory ECU is located behind the kick-panel of the passenger side foot-well. The battery should be disconnected during the entire switch-over procedure.

  • Our performance PCMs are limited in what they can cater for. If you're running forced induction, nitrous, have built a stroker, heavily modified cylinder heads or a running a camshaft that we don't stock, a custom dyno tune is required instead. We can recommend a workshop if that's the case.

Exclusive to Mace Engineering, here we have our design-registered lower manifold insulators to suit the Holden VX and VY series, fitted with an Ecotec L36 3.8L 6 cylinder engine.

 

What are manifold insulators and what do they do?

Manifold insulators are a thermal insulating spacer that mount between your engine block and intake manifold. Made from a heat blocking composite, our manifold insulators will increase power from your engine by keeping the intake cooler and increase low end torque by increasing runner length.

But how do manifold insulators keep the intake manifold cooler?

Given our manifold insulators are made from a composite material with a thermal conductivity of 0.29 W/m*K as opposed to aluminium, which has a thermal conductivity of 150 W/m*K; The difference works about to be that aluminium conducts heat 500 times higher than our composite material!

Also, with gaskets often made out of steel (thermal conductivity of 20 W/m-K) placed between the upper and lower manifolds being 0.5mm thick, replacing them with a manifold insulator will conduct up to an amazing 3,448 times less heat depending on the size chosen.

Our composite material also exhibits high stiffness and compressive strength, can withstand temperatures up to 150°C, and has a thermal expansion coefficient very similar to aluminium to increase sealing capabilities. In addition, the spacer can also withstand boosted conditions with ease.

 

Dyno Results:

The following test was conducted on a 1996 Holden Commodore VS with head and cam work. Normally the problem of low down torque is made worse when you stick a larger cam (with more overlap) in any engine as you effectively shift the power band. However by looking at the graph, we can see that power produced down low had increased by a staggering 10% using only our 12mm manifold insulator, with top-end increasing by a further 2kw at the rears! Please note that these results don't reflect the true nature of the on road gains given the lack of actual airflow, which further drop inlet temps.

Under normal driving conditions the plenum (upper manifold), with the insulator in place, becomes cool enough to comfortably touch. Unlike before, without the manifold insulator under the same driving conditions, making it very difficult to touch without getting burned!

What is a plenum spacer and what does it do?

A plenum spacer thermally separates the plenum cover and intake manifold. Its main purpose is to improve air distribution between cylinders by slowing down the air speed inside the plenum chamber. As a result there is less of a pressure drop inside the plenum chamber between cylinders, and less air momentum, resulting in better air distribution and power. The change in airflow characteristics is shown in the diagram below.

 

 

Not only will our spacer help you make more power, it will also help prevent any costly rebuilds through dangerous lean outs that occur due to poor air distribution with standard manifolds in high horsepower/boost applications.

In addition to improving air distribution between cylinders, the increase in plenum volume also has a positive effect on bottom end torque.

The fact these spacers are manufactured from the same thermal resistant composite material as our manifold insulators means further horsepower gains are possible due to the reduction in heat soak.
